Chris Dovas has been a significant addition to TESTAMENT since joining the Bay Area thrash band in 2023. Following in the footsteps of renowned drummers Gene Hoglan and Dave Lombardo, Dovas’s youthful vigor has been praised by Chuck Billy (vocals) and Eric Peterson (guitar) as exactly what the band needed for their 14th studio album. Dovas first showcased his skills during live performances of classic albums like “The Legacy”, “New Order”, and “Practice What You Preach”. He then worked closely with Peterson to develop what would become “Para Bellum”, impressing everyone ahead of the album’s October release.
The dynamic drumming by Dovas is just one aspect of “Para Bellum”. The album, featuring lead guitarist Alex Skolnick and bassist Steve Di Giorgio, is considered one of TESTAMENT’s most diverse works since 2008’s “The Formation Of Damnation”. From the black metal influences in “For The Love Of Pain” to the grooves of “Room 117” and “Shadow People”, and the ballad “Meant To Be”, the album showcases the band’s enduring creativity as they continue their fourth decade. Billy expressed to BLABBERMOUTH.NET that the current band lineup is working well together.
Interview Highlights
Blabbermouth: What impact has Chris had on the band, particularly for you as the vocalist?
Chuck: “Chris has inspired Eric to explore more aggressive writing. Their time together, jamming and experimenting, brought a lot of variety to the record. It was a fresh experience for me to adapt vocally to the new riffs and patterns.”
Blabbermouth: The black metal influence is evident in tracks like “For The Love Of Pain”. How do you feel about singing over such riffs?
Chuck: “I enjoy it. Chris brings a fresh energy that opens up possibilities for me. Working with new producer Jens Bogren was also a great experience, especially on tracks like ‘Meant To Be’.”
Band Dynamics
Blabbermouth: Was there any concern about Chris fitting in, given the age difference?
Chuck: “Not really. His talent was evident from his audition. We were surprised to learn he was only 24. Despite the age gap, he fits in well with the band.”
Blabbermouth: How does the band maintain such good camaraderie?
Chuck: “We all get along well, which is crucial. We’ve learned to enjoy our time together, and everyone has their routines that keep the environment positive.”
Creative Process
Blabbermouth: What was it like working with Jens Bogren?
Chuck: “Jens’s attention to detail was impressive. Though we didn’t meet in person, his mixing brought out the best in our tracks. His work on ‘Meant To Be’ was particularly notable.”
Blabbermouth: Can you tell us about the inspiration behind “Witch Hunt”?
Chuck: “It’s a commentary on political and social issues, co-written with Steve Souza. The title inspired us to explore themes of persecution and judgment.”
Future Plans
Blabbermouth: Are you considering a solo album?
Chuck: “I definitely want to pursue a solo project, but TESTAMENT’s work takes priority. The band is eager to continue writing and creating together.”
