Halle Berry Criticizes Governor Newsom Over Menopause Bill
Actress Halle Berry expressed strong disapproval of California Governor Gavin Newsom, accusing him of undervaluing women and suggesting he should not pursue the presidency. Her comments were made during the New York Times DealBook Summit, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Berry criticized Newsom for vetoing a menopause-related bill for two consecutive years, emphasizing that his actions have disregarded half of the population. Newsom, 58, was also present at the event and took the stage later.
Governor’s Response
Izzy Gardon, a spokesperson for Newsom, responded by acknowledging Berry’s advocacy and expressed a desire to collaborate on menopause care issues. Gardon explained that the bill was vetoed because it might have inadvertently increased healthcare costs for many women.
Gardon expressed confidence in finding a solution that expands access to menopause treatment without raising costs.
Berry’s Advocacy
Berry, a vocal advocate for menopausal women, has supported the Menopause Care Equity Act. This bipartisan bill, vetoed by Newsom in October, aimed to ensure comprehensive health insurance for women in menopause and required ongoing menopause education for physicians.
Berry has shared her own experiences with misdiagnosis during perimenopause, highlighting the need for better understanding and support.
Personal Experiences
In February, on the “Drew Barrymore Show,” Berry discussed her personal struggles with perimenopause, including a misdiagnosis that led to unnecessary distress. She emphasized the importance of educating women about menopause symptoms.
Berry’s advocacy has led her to launch the Respin platform, which provides menopause-related information and support for women.
Celebrating Menopause
Berry believes in celebrating menopause as a significant life milestone. She shared with podcast host Tamsen Fadal that women should acknowledge this transition with a celebration, similar to other life events.
