The Best Rock Song of 2025

The Best Rock Song of 2025

Mammoth’s track “The End” has been named Loudwire’s top rock song of 2025.

This song serves as the title track from Mammoth’s third album and was the leading single, released in May. Wolfgang Van Halen performed all instruments and vocals, showcasing his singular creative talent.

Loudwire conducted an in-depth interview with Wolfgang about the song’s creation and its significance for Mammoth.

Why Was This Song Chosen?

Wolfgang has spent years establishing his own legacy, separate from his father, and “The End” embraces his musical heritage. The song reflects his growth both musically and personally, inviting fans along on his journey. From his early days with Van Halen to his experiences with Tremonti and now Mammoth, Wolfgang’s story has been unfolding for years, and “The End” suggests the best is yet to come.

Interestingly, although “The End” was the first new material released from the album, it was written later during the recording process. Wolfgang shared, “I always had this idea, but it felt a bit over-the-top. The new demoing process in the studio allowed me to take more risks.”

Mammoth, ‘The End’

The track has a familiar feel, partly because Wolfgang used his father Eddie Van Halen’s iconic Frankenstein guitar for the tapping sections. “It’s comforting to have dad be part of it, intertwining our fates in my music,” he said. Wolfgang explained that he no longer hesitates to include tapping techniques, focusing on enjoying the music and expressing himself freely.

The most challenging part was developing the solo. Wolfgang noted, “How do you write a solo for a song that’s essentially a solo?” Yet, he crafted a captivating solo that perfectly complemented the lyrics. “I knew it was the one,” he added.

Fan Reactions

Wolfgang’s instincts were spot on, as fans responded positively to “The End.” Comments from the Van Halen Reddit page include:

The Meaning Behind “The End”

The song’s title, “The End,” holds various meanings. Wolfgang was inspired by the Los Angeles wildfires at the start of 2025, channeling his anxiety into the lyrics. “I explored different interpretations of ‘the end’ across the songs, creating a concept record unintentionally,” he said.

Wolfgang explained that some songs, like “The Spell,” deal with loss, while others, like “All in Good Time,” offer a hopeful perspective. “The End” reflects Mammoth’s evolution, marking the end of the old and the beginning of the new.

Plans for 2026

In 2026, Wolfgang aims to tour extensively with Mammoth, performing new songs for audiences. He also plans to return to the studio early in the year. “This tour is a step up from anything we’ve done before,” he said. “Seeing people connect with the music is incredibly rewarding.”
