Rob Reiner and Son Nick’s On-Set Dispute
Rob Reiner and his son Nick were reportedly involved in a public disagreement during the production of their 2016 film, “Being Charlie.”
Stunt performer Erik Audé shared insights into the tense relationship between the late actor and his youngest son in an interview with Page Six. This discussion came just hours after Nick’s arrest related to the stabbing deaths of his parents.
Audé recounted arriving on the movie set, co-written by Nick and directed by Rob, to witness the father-son duo arguing in front of cast and crew members.
Audé described the scene, noting that Nick appeared spoiled and Rob seemed frustrated with his behavior. He observed significant tension during their on-set confrontation.
“I just assumed, rightly or wrongly, that Nick was pushing all his buttons. Rob couldn’t seem to do anything right,” Audé commented, adding that Nick seemed like a “nepo-baby” and “spoiled kid.”
Despite the issues, Audé noted Rob’s love for Nick, as evidenced by his involvement in the film for his son’s benefit.
Before Nick’s arrest, Audé suspected Nick might have been involved in Rob’s death, based on the hostility observed on set.
“I sensed that hostility from just one day on set,” Audé stated. “The exchange was that weird and awkward.”
Audé mentioned that Rob and Nick eventually reconciled after their argument, sealing it with a “kiss on the lips.”
“Families fight, but usually in private. They didn’t filter themselves around others,” Audé remarked.
Although his scene was cut from the film, Audé recalled Rob being consistently kind to him.
The film, which is semi-autobiographical, explores a young man’s battle with drug addiction, reflecting Nick’s personal struggles.
Nick claimed in a 2016 interview with AOL that the project brought him closer to his father. However, a production source told Page Six that it actually strained their relationship further.
“The film was intended as a healing process, but it seemed to increase the tension between them,” the source noted.
In a video shared on Instagram, Audé explained how he was cast in the film, meeting Rob in a hotel elevator in Salt Lake City in 2015.
“We kept passing each other in the hallway,” Audé said. “Eventually, I asked him about stunt work in his movie, and he stopped the elevator to get my details.”
Despite political differences, Audé respected Rob as a director and actor, appreciating his talent.
Rob and Michele were discovered stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home on Sunday. Rob was 78, and Michele was 68.
Page Six confirmed Monday that Nick was arrested on murder charges. He is being held without bail and is reportedly on suicide watch.
Nick, who has battled homelessness due to addiction, has been in and out of rehab since age 15.
The “Princess Bride” director and Michele reportedly argued with Nick at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party, just a day before they were found dead.
Rob and Michele had two other children, Jake, 34, and Romy, 28. Rob also adopted daughter Tracy, 61, during his first marriage to Penny Marshall.
