Hollywood Mourns the Loss of Director Rob Reiner
Billy Crystal and his wife, Janice, along with several close friends from Hollywood, are honoring the memory of Rob Reiner, director of When Harry Met Sally, following his passing two days ago.
On December 16, a joint statement was released to the Associated Press by the Crystals, Albert and Kimberly Brooks, Martin Short, Alan and Robin Zweibel, Larry David and Ashley Underwood, Marc Shaiman and Lou Mirabal, Barry and Diana Levinson, and Ambassador James Costos and Michael Smith.
Remembering a Storyteller
The statement began by celebrating the unique experience of watching films in theaters, emphasizing Reiner’s storytelling prowess. Drawing from his father Carl Reiner and mentor Norman Lear, Rob was praised for his versatility in directing comedies, dramas, mockumentaries, and documentaries, always captivating audiences.
“His comedic touch was unparalleled, and his ability to refine dialogue and drama was simply elegant. He valued actors and improved writers, offering creative freedom and fostering teamwork,” the statement noted.
Rob Reiner’s commitment extended beyond filmmaking. He and his wife, Michele, were dedicated citizens, striving for societal improvement. The statement described them as a dynamic and inspiring couple.
Tragic Passing
Rob and Michele Reiner were found deceased in their Los Angeles home on December 14. Rob was 78, and Michele was 68. A family spokesperson told Variety, “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss and request privacy during this difficult time.”
The couple had three children: Nick, Jake, and Romy Reiner. Rob also adopted daughter Tracy during his marriage to the late Penny Marshall.
Following the incident, Nick Reiner was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty.

Tributes and Memories
As news of their deaths spread, tributes poured in from Hollywood. Crystal and Larry David were seen arriving separately at the Reiners’ home on the day of their passing.
Billy Crystal and Rob Reiner’s friendship began in 1975 on All in the Family. Crystal admired Rob’s intelligence and humor, recalling how he adeptly managed scripts and performances.
Their collaboration continued through several iconic films, including This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, and The Princess Bride.
Crystal praised Reiner’s diverse filmmaking and activism, sharing a fond memory from the first screening of When Harry Met Sally. The audience’s reaction to the famous scene with Rob’s mother, Estelle, was unforgettable.
