SWEET SAVAGE’s RAY HALLER: ‘I Owe So Much To METALLICA’ For Covering ‘Killing Time’

Recognition Boost from Metallica’s Cover

In a recent discussion with Spain’s Made In Metal, Ray Haller, the bassist and vocalist of Belfast’s metal band SWEET SAVAGE, shared insights on how their band gained significant attention after METALLICA covered their song “Killing Time.” This track, co-authored by SWEET SAVAGE’s co-founder and future DIO/DEF LEPPARD guitarist Vivian Campbell, was featured as the B-side of METALLICA’s hit single “The Unforgiven.” Haller expressed gratitude, acknowledging the pivotal role METALLICA played in revitalizing SWEET SAVAGE’s career. He explained that prior to the cover, the band’s performances and tours were dwindling. However, after METALLICA’s release, SWEET SAVAGE experienced a resurgence, with increased tour opportunities and financial benefits. Haller credits METALLICA for enabling them to produce a new record and for continuous support, mentioning that the band still invites him to their shows.

SWEET SAVAGE’s Early Days

Reflecting on SWEET SAVAGE’s origins, Haller recounted the band’s beginnings with Vivian Campbell. Initially a cover band playing songs by DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH, and others, they decided to create original music. Together with founding guitarist Trevor Fleming, they wrote new songs. Haller emphasized the mutual influence and confidence shared among the band members, despite challenges in securing a record deal due to the political climate in Northern Ireland at the time.

Continued Friendship with Campbell

Haller maintains a close friendship with Campbell, communicating regularly since Campbell’s departure from SWEET SAVAGE in the 1980s. Haller expressed pride in Campbell’s successful career, noting that if SWEET SAVAGE had secured a record deal, Campbell might not have joined DIO.

Recent Releases and Performances

SWEET SAVAGE released their latest album, “Bang,” in September through earMUSIC. The current lineup includes Haller, drummer Marty McCloskey, and guitarist Phil Edgar, with contributions from former member Simon McBride. In 2008, METALLICA’s James Hetfield joined SWEET SAVAGE on stage in Dublin to perform “Killing Time.” Vivian Campbell, who was with the band from 1979 to 1982, reunited with them in 2011 for a performance in Belfast and Dublin.

Campbell on METALLICA’s Influence

In a 2018 interview, Campbell reflected on METALLICA covering “Killing Time,” describing it as flattering and noting similarities between the two bands. He recounted how SWEET SAVAGE formed in a challenging environment in Belfast and expressed appreciation for the unexpected success and recognition that followed.
