Marianna, Arkansas, is where I was shaped musically. It’s a small town with just two stoplights. My mother has been pastoring the same church for 40 years, and I grew up with the sounds of gospel music. This environment taught me the nuances of musical expression. Now living in West Memphis, close to Memphis, Tennessee, I’ve absorbed influences from both regions, blending Arkansas’s blues with Memphis’s musical richness.
Transition from Church to Southern Soul
The transition wasn’t difficult. My parents have pastored the same church for 40 years. I recently shared this with gospel legend Evelyn Turrentine. My father, a pastor, supported my decision to explore music beyond church. He publicly endorsed my dream, emphasizing that if God blesses it, it’s worthwhile. His approval was all I needed.
Inspirations for Writing
Everyday life in West Memphis inspires me. From daily struggles to simple pleasures, everything influences my music. I recently wrote “Sundown,” a love song about my partner. Arkansas offers a slower pace, allowing reflection and creativity. I aim to capture these experiences in Soul Therapy.
Inspiration Behind “Southern Man”
“Southern Man” was inspired by my husband. Initially, it was a personal gift, not intended as a hit. During the COVID pandemic, my husband encouraged me to focus on my music studies while he managed finances. With no money for a Father’s Day gift, I wrote “Southern Man” for him. Unexpectedly, it resonated widely, becoming a beloved track. It’s a tribute to his role as a father and partner, reflecting the qualities of southern men I admire.
Role in Southern Soul’s Evolution
Our generation is bridging musical gaps by reviving authentic music. By infusing real-life messages into our songs, we can positively influence society. If we restore genuine love and values in music, it aligns with real-life experiences. Southern soul has the potential to unite generations and redefine cultural norms.
