Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra represent a remarkable camaraderie in Indian cinema, particularly as they portrayed the iconic characters of Jai and Veeru in the classic film Sholay. Released in 1975, this film not only became a cultural phenomenon but also showcased their memorable performance in the song “Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Todenge,” sung by Manna Dey and Kishore Kumar. The recent passing of Dharmendra, who was 89, has left fans mourning, especially as Bachchan attended his on-screen partner’s last rites.

Dharmendra’s legacy in film is extensive, with Sholay being a standout in his career. The duo’s portrayal of Jai and Veeru is not only beloved by audiences but also holds the record for the longest box office success in Indian cinema history. Below, we explore this exceptional achievement.

Jai & Veeru’s 19-Year Box Office Record

The film Sholay set a remarkable box office record upon its release in 1975, directed by Ramesh Sippy, grossing a net collection of ₹15 crore in India. This achievement remained unmatched for nearly two decades, as no Indian film surpassed this figure until 1994, when Hum Aapke Hain Koun, featuring Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit, grossed ₹72 crore, thereby breaking Sholay‘s longstanding record. Thus, it held the title of the highest-grossing Indian film for an impressive 19 years.

Dharmendra Recommended Amitabh Bachchan

Interestingly, it was Dharmendra who advocated for Amitabh Bachchan’s casting in Sholay. Initially, the role of Jai was intended for Shatrughan Sinha. However, Dharmendra suggested Bachchan to director Ramesh Sippy, believing he would excel in the role. In a recent interview, Dharmendra recounted how he had been approached for both the characters of Gabbar Singh and Thakur, but ultimately pushed for Bachchan’s inclusion.

“Ye Naya Ladka…Accha Kaam Karega!”

In June 2025, Dharmendra shared his thoughts during a conversation with ANI, stating, “It has already been mentioned. Yes, I recommended him. I won’t say I got him the role. Amitabh used to come to meet me. He would sit next to me. So, I told Ramesh Sippy that this new guy has a great voice and would perform well. His passion and charm were impressive, so I suggested they cast him.”
