EXODUS Films Music Videos for Upcoming Album
San Francisco Bay Area thrash metal band EXODUS has completed filming music videos for three tracks from their forthcoming studio album, expected to release next spring through Napalm Records. The videos were directed by Jim Louvau, a creative artist based in Phoenix, Arizona, who previously directed EXODUS’s video for “The Fires Of Division” from their 2021 album “Persona Non Grata”.
Video Shoot and Album Details
On December 12, EXODUS shared a social media post featuring a photo from their post-video shoot dinner at Peppermill Steakhouse in Tempe, Arizona. The caption noted the absence of bassist Jack Gibson, who had an early flight home. The band expressed excitement about the videos, stating they were thrilled with the outcome despite their general dislike for making videos, crediting Louvau for making the process enjoyable.
Upcoming Album Insights
Guitarist Gary Holt revealed to Robb Chavez of Robbs MetalWorks that the band’s next album, a follow-up to “Persona Non Grata,” is scheduled for release on March 20. Holt expressed immense pride in the new record, describing it as “awesome” and highlighting the extensive material created during the recording sessions. The band has nearly completed two albums’ worth of tracks, with plans to release the second set after the initial touring cycle.
Recording Process and Band Dynamics
Holt explained that 80% of the follow-up material is already finished, thanks to continuous work during a two-month studio session. The band members lived together during this time, fostering a collaborative environment akin to a “heavy metal summer camp.” Holt praised guitarist Lee Altus for contributing significantly to the songwriting.
Return of Rob Dukes
EXODUS welcomed back vocalist Rob Dukes, who replaced Steve “Zetro” Souza in January. Holt praised Dukes’s performance on the new album, promising fans they would be impressed by his vocals. Holt described the new material as diverse, combining fast-paced tracks with some of the heaviest music the band has ever produced.
Production and Mixing
The upcoming album will be the first in almost 30 years not mixed by Andy Sneap. Instead, Mark Lewis, known for his work with MEGADETH and others, handled the mixing. Holt shared on Instagram that the decision to work with Lewis was a step outside their comfort zone, resulting in a “crushing” mix.
Rob Dukes’s Perspective
In an interview with Chicago’s Rebel Radio 92.5 FM, Dukes expressed his excitement about the new material, calling it the best work he has done with EXODUS. He noted the album’s diversity and innovation, maintaining the band’s identity while introducing new elements.
Band History and Legacy
EXODUS, although not typically grouped with the “Big Four” of 1980s thrash metal, has been highly influential. Their 1985 album “Bonded By Blood” inspired bands like TESTAMENT and DEATH ANGEL. Dukes, who first joined EXODUS in 2005, rejoined the band for a performance at the Decibel Magazine Metal & Beer Fest in Philadelphia in April.
