European Christmas markets are renowned, with cities like Prague, Vienna, and Budapest often taking the spotlight. However, after visiting these destinations, I found myself underwhelmed.
Seeking a final festive experience, I ventured to Cologne, Germany, which turned out to be one of my most memorable holiday trips.
The Allure of Cologne’s Christmas Markets
Cologne hosts several major Christmas markets, conveniently located close to each other and each offering unique themes.
One of the most popular is the Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market. After climbing the 533 steps to the south tower’s viewing platform, visitors can enjoy refreshing beverages. Options include fizzy drinks, Bailey’s hot chocolate, or Glühwein, the traditional German mulled wine.
The market also features stalls with chocolate-covered fruit, a staple at these events. The milk chocolate Kinder strawberries were particularly delightful.

Exploring More Markets
At the Heinzels Winter Fairytale market, located near TimeRide, visitors can enjoy a virtual reality experience of Cologne in the 1920s. This market spans the Old Town squares of Heumarkt and Alter Markt, celebrating Cologne’s legendary house elves.
The Heumarkt area features a 2,400 square meter open-air ice rink, while the Alter Markt offers a festive atmosphere with carol singers and musicians. The freshly made crisps with garlic sauce were a highlight.
Nicholas’ Village in Rudolfplatz, near a historic city gate, is another must-visit. Known for its iconic boot mugs, a Bailey’s hot chocolate costs €10, with a €5 refund available if the mug is returned.

Additional Attractions
The Harbour Christmas Market, located near the NH Köln Altstadt Hotel and the Lindt Chocolate Museum, offers a marine theme and a panoramic Ferris wheel. A combo ticket with the museum is available.
Visitors can enjoy the photobooth for souvenirs and explore stalls selling decorative paper lanterns.
The Angels’ Christmas Market and Advent Village are also worth visiting. The former is centrally located, while the latter provides a quieter atmosphere.
Beyond the Markets
A trip to Phantasialand in nearby Brühl is recommended. The Wintertraum festivities offer tickets for €28, featuring rides and shows that rival major theme parks.
The park includes family-friendly sections with unique rides and play areas, ensuring entertainment for all ages.
