Meenakshi Seshadri, currently in Dallas, USA, with her family, shared, “I am pleased to discuss being directed by Dilip Kumar in Kalinga. I want to honor him on his 103rd birth anniversary on December 11.”

The actress recalls her experience working with the legendary actor on his ambitious project, Kalinga, a film that remains unreleased after 35 years.

“Collaborating with him was unforgettable,” Meenakshi told Dinesh Raheja. “I’m honored he chose me for his film.”

Did Dilip Kumar approach you for Kalinga?

Dilip Kumar wanted to collaborate with me.

I was cast in Kalinga according to the director’s vision.

The producer, Sudhakar Bokade, finalized the arrangements.

How did it feel to be selected by Dilip Kumar?

I’m philosophical about it. I didn’t question why I was chosen over others.

I was thrilled to work with a legend from Hindi cinema’s iconic trio: Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, and Dev Anand.

Having completed films with Dev Anand, it was an honor to work with Dilip Kumar in his directorial debut.

Describe being directed by Dilip Kumar.

He made me feel valued, boosting my confidence.

I was humbled by his appreciation.

What was your role in Kalinga?

The film began production around 1991.

It’s a multi-starrer, but I was satisfied with my role.

Can you share details of your role?

I portrayed a tribal queen with psychic abilities, speaking a regional dialect.

Dilip Kumar was meticulous about my character’s details, including special contact lenses and costumes by designer Leena Daru.

Every scene was significant, with impactful dialogues.

Was Sunny Deol initially cast opposite you?

Dilip Kumar considered various options before selecting a newcomer.

When did you first meet Dilip Kumar?

We met at the release of Subhash Ghai’s Vidhaata in 1982. I was overwhelmed and quiet.

His wife, Saira Banu, was very welcoming.

Were you familiar with Dilip Kumar’s films growing up?

Yes, I’d seen many of his significant works like Azaad, Naya Daur, Ram Aur Shyam, Daastaan, Madhumati.

How would you assess his acting?

Dilip Kumar was a mix of natural and stylized acting, similar to many greats in cinema.

He was known for his excellent dialogue delivery.

During Kalinga, he would guide me in delivering lines, making me feel like a mini Dilip Kumar.

Did you discuss your role with him?

He treated me as a peer, though I was much younger.

We would discuss different viewpoints, and he was always professional.

What was he like personally?

His command of language and sense of humor were admirable.

He was always pleasant and welcoming.

How much was filmed for Kalinga?

We filmed a romantic song in Mercara, Coorg, and various scenes in Rajasthan.

However, production halted, and I have no idea how much was completed.

Why was the film shelved?

The production faced issues, with schedules canceled and payments unmet.

Dilip Kumar eventually decided it was unfeasible to continue.

Were you compensated?

I was paid for the work completed, but payments ceased when the film stopped.

Were you moving to America during this time?

No, I moved in 1995. At that time, I was still involved in films and classical dance performances.

Was the film ever considered for release after Dilip Kumar’s passing?

I wasn’t contacted about it. After moving to the USA, reviving the film seemed improbable.

Final thoughts on Dilip Kumar’s legacy?

Dilip Kumar’s legacy surpasses Kalinga. His contributions to cinema are invaluable.

His challenging roles and memorable performances remain unmatched.

Working with him was an honor I cherish deeply.
