T.I. Discusses Disconnection from Church in Conversation with Kirk Franklin
T.I. Shares Views on Religion
In a recent discussion led by gospel singer Kirk Franklin, rapper T.I. opened up about his personal views on faith and his lack of connection to the church. The conversation, which included R&B artists Eric Bellinger and Jacquees, as well as producer Jermaine Dupri, took place on Franklin’s show “Den of Kings” on December 14.
T.I.’s Perspective on Church
T.I. revealed that despite being raised with religious influences, he has never felt a strong connection to the church. He explained, “I know how to pray and I know the word. I know God is real, and I’ve seen His presence in my life. I just haven’t felt connected to the church.”
Franklin inquired further, and T.I. candidly responded, “To be honest, I think it’s a business, just like anything else. It’s a show, similar to Broadway.”
Criticism of Church Practices
T.I. elaborated on his views, suggesting that some religious leaders manipulate the word for personal gain. He referenced a biblical example where Jesus expressed anger at the misuse of God’s word. “That’s when Jesus got mad. Flipped tables,” T.I. stated, emphasizing his belief that the true spirit of faith doesn’t require intermediaries.
Personal Experiences with Church
T.I. recounted experiences where pastors pressured congregants for money. He recalled a specific instance where a preacher urged the crowd to donate more, prompting T.I. to question, “Y’all telling me I got to pay for my God to hear my prayer? Man, I’m out of here.”
Franklin acknowledged these issues, calling them “unfortunate.”
Public Reaction
The conversation sparked mixed reactions online. Some agreed with T.I., stating, “Church is a BUSINESS, spirituality is the RELATIONSHIP,” while others argued for the importance of community and fellowship within the church.
Family’s Past Church Experience
T.I.’s son, Domani, previously shared that their family stopped attending church regularly after a pastor seemed to exploit T.I.’s celebrity status. Domani noted, “They started drawing too much attention and passing the collection plate more often.”
Despite this, Domani emphasized the continued value of church as an institution.
T.I. has not publicly responded to the discussions or any backlash regarding his comments.
