Mary Holt, in her 60s, was one of two individuals who perished in a house fire at Castleview Park, Edenderry, Co Offaly, on Saturday evening.

The blaze also claimed the life of a four-year-old boy, Tadhg Farrell, in what authorities are calling a “reckless, callous and murderous attack on a family home.”

Mary Holt, described as a “beautiful angel” by her family, worked at a local nursing home. She has been identified as Tadhg’s great-aunt.

The Gardaí have launched a murder investigation into the deaths of Mary Holt and Tadhg Farrell. It is suspected that the attack may be linked to individuals involved in drug dealing, although the victims themselves had no criminal connections.

Another woman in her 50s, present during the attack, is currently hospitalized with serious injuries.

Community in Mourning

Tributes have poured in for the victims, with family members expressing their grief and love for Mary Holt. A heartfelt message from a relative read: “No words can say how I feel at this moment. You’re the most kind, caring person I know. I love you, Aunty Mary. I’ll miss you forever.”

Mary and Tadhg were innocent relatives of a convicted drug dealer, targeted due to their family ties.

The fire broke out just before 7:45 pm on Saturday, December 6, 2025. Emergency services arrived to find the two-story house engulfed in flames, and both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

The property remains a crime scene, with the Garda Technical Bureau conducting a thorough examination. Investigators believe the fire was deliberately set, possibly as an act of revenge connected to the drug trade.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have confirmed that the house had been previously targeted, with incidents such as smashed windows and a misplaced pipe bomb.

An Garda Síochána is conducting a comprehensive murder investigation, confirming the fire as an intentional attack. Post-mortems are scheduled at Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore by Assistant State Pathologist Margot Bolster.

A Senior Investigating Officer is leading the inquiry, and a Family Liaison Officer is supporting the victims’ family.

Local officials have expressed their shock and sadness. Councillor Fergus McDonnell described the community’s heartbreak, stating, “It’s dreadful and horrendous that two lives, a woman and a young boy, have been lost in the house fire.”

Independent TD Carol Nolan also expressed her sorrow, calling the incident “heartbreaking and devastating.”

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone in the Castleview Park area between 7 pm and 8 pm on Saturday. Motorists with dashcam footage from that time are urged to come forward.
