Jeremy Sumpter: From “Peter Pan” to New Horizons
Jeremy Sumpter, known for his role as Peter Pan in the 2003 film directed by P.J. Hogan, remains a memorable figure for many millennials who recall him as their first celebrity crush.
Now 36, Sumpter continues to be recognized by fans, reflecting on the lasting impact of the film. “Every day, someone mentions it,” he tells Page Six. “The movie came out in ’03, and now it’s their daughter’s first crush. It’s timeless. Being part of that film has been a blessing.”
The New York Post noted the film’s unique take on the classic tale, highlighting its “raging adolescence” and Hogan’s emphasis on Freudian themes.
Career Progression
While Sumpter cherishes his “Peter Pan” days, he has continued to pursue various roles, including in the series “Friday Night Lights” and the 2014 film “Into the Storm.”
Recently, he took a break from acting to welcome his first child with wife Elizabeth Treadway. Now, he is eager to return to the industry with new projects in the pipeline.
“Having a daughter shifted my focus. Now, I’m ready to fully invest in my career, transitioning from child actor to leading man and director,” Sumpter explains.
Upcoming Projects
Sumpter’s upcoming film “Miami Nights” features him alongside Oscar nominee Terrence Howard, “Black Panther” actor Sydelle Noel, and “Entourage” alum Jeremy Piven.
The film follows two war heroes who, after saving a journalist, are dishonorably discharged and find themselves involved in a dangerous plot involving a priceless diamond.
During filming in Atlanta, Miami, and Los Angeles, Sumpter learned valuable lessons from Howard, who shared insights on life and respect.
Following “Miami Nights,” Sumpter will star with Mina Sundwall in “Alterity.”
Directorial Debut
Sumpter is set to direct and star in “Strawberry Roan,” a romantic comedy about a horse enthusiast and a failed trader starting a sanctuary in Mexico.
“I’ve always wanted to direct. Making short films as a child sparked that passion,” he says. “Working on set taught me a lot about filmmaking. Many believe I’d excel as a director, and now I have the chance.”
Joining him on this venture is Rachel Hurd-Wood, his “Peter Pan” co-star, who will be the leading lady in his directorial debut.
“I told Rachel, ‘For my first time directing, I couldn’t imagine anyone else as my leading lady,'” Sumpter shares, adding that they’ve stayed close over the years.
Future Ambitions
Among Sumpter’s dreams is organizing a “Peter Pan” fan convention in London, featuring various participants from the “Peter Pan” universe.
“The story of Peter Pan has endured for over a century and remains one of the most beloved tales,” he reflects.
Sumpter remains grounded, valuing his roots and reflecting fondly on his career beginnings. “I grew up in Kentucky, and I’m passionate about spreading love and happiness. It’s been a blessing, and I’m excited for what lies ahead.”
