Dr. Rajiv Vijaykar explored his life in the book, Dharmendra: A Biography: Not Just a He-Man.

“The name ‘Garam Dharam’ became linked to him as his action roles gained popularity,” Dr. Vijaykar told Patcy N/Rediff. “He epitomized the perfect son, husband, and sweetheart, fitting every role seamlessly.”

Inspiration for Writing

Dr. Vijaykar shared his reasons for writing about Dharmendra. Growing up watching Hindi films, he admired Dharmendra’s work. As a journalist, he often proposed interviews with him, but faced rejections due to Dharmendra’s career slump in the 1990s.

In 2007, with the release of Apne, he wrote an article that caught attention. Later, Rupa Publications offered him the opportunity to write an authorized biography. Dharmendra supported the project, commending Dr. Vijaykar’s previous work.

The book includes insights into Dharmendra’s relationships, including with Hema Malini and Meena Kumari.

First Encounter

Dr. Vijaykar first met Dharmendra at the music launch of Chamko in Mumbai. Dharmendra warmly introduced him to his sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol. Despite traffic delays, Dr. Vijaykar attended many subsequent events, including the Yamla Pagla Deewana music launch.

Influence of Shaheed

Dharmendra’s passion for acting was ignited after watching Shaheed (1948) starring Dilip Kumar. His initial attempts in Bombay were challenging until he gained recognition through the Filmfare Talent Hunt. Arjun Hingorani became a crucial mentor in his journey.

Friendship with Manoj Kumar

Dharmendra, Shashi Kapoor, and Manoj Kumar shared a bond from their struggling days. During a conversation, Dharmendra expressed concern about misconceptions if they visited Shashi Kapoor in the hospital during a film release.

Humble Nature

Dharmendra was known for his modesty. On The Kapil Sharma Show, he expressed joy in others’ successes, highlighting his simple aspirations of owning a car and a flat.

Career Reflection

Dharmendra’s career spanned diverse genres, including a phase of B-grade films due to financial needs. His investments in projects like a film studio and Sunny Super Sound were substantial. Despite being under-rated, his natural acting style was widely appreciated.

Titles and Legacy

His titles, He-Man and Garam Dharam, emerged with his successful transition to action roles, starting with Phool Aur Patthar. He represented ideal roles within society with ease.
