SKILLET’s JOHN COOPER: ‘When I Was Five Years Old, I Gave My Life To Jesus In My Bedroom’

Podcast Discussion: John Cooper of SKILLET Talks Faith and Music

In a recent episode of the “See The King” podcast, host Adam Ross interviewed John Cooper from the Christian rock band SKILLET. The conversation covered topics such as rock music, faith, and the challenges of following a spiritual calling that may not align with societal expectations. Cooper shared his experiences growing up in an environment where rock music, including Christian rock, was often viewed with suspicion. He also discussed his mother’s three-year battle with cancer and her passing when he was just 15, highlighting how her steadfast faith shaped his own beliefs and trust in God during difficult times. Additionally, Cooper reflected on how SKILLET’s music connects with people facing addiction, depression, and hopelessness, emphasizing the importance of taking life one day at a time.

Early Life and Faith

John Cooper spoke about his upbringing, saying, “I was raised by Christian parents. My mom was very devoted to Jesus, and everything in her life revolved around her faith. I remember as a child, even at the age of four, going to the grocery store meant not just buying food but also talking to people about Jesus. My mom would approach strangers to pray for them, often touching their lives in unexpected ways.”

He continued, “My mom read the Bible to us daily before school. I had an older brother, and our mornings included breakfast, Bible reading, and prayer. This was our routine. I accepted Jesus into my life at the age of five, alone in my bedroom. I’ve always believed in God, and that belief was a natural part of my life.”

Personal Testimony

Cooper added, “Some people suggest that children can’t fully understand their faith, but I disagree. I had a genuine understanding of my need to please God and follow His will. My children were raised similarly and made their own commitments to Christ at a young age. We understand that we don’t deserve His love, but He reached out to us anyway. That’s my testimony, and I’m grateful for it.”

He explained, “I don’t have a story of turning away from faith or engaging in a lifestyle of rebellion. By God’s grace, I’ve known Him since childhood. While I haven’t always lived perfectly, I’ve never experienced extreme doubt. Many people have powerful testimonies of overcoming such struggles, but mine is about a lifelong relationship with God. I’m blessed.”

Public Faith and Writing

Cooper, known for expressing his beliefs in secular spaces and addressing social and political issues, has authored two books: “Awake & Alive to Truth” (2020) and “Wimpy, Weak, And Woke” (2023). In an interview with Baptist News, he stated, “We are vocal about Christ being the only way to heaven and about moral issues. I speak on topics like abortion and traditional sexuality with boldness and compassion, even toward those who disagree.”

He told Baptist Press, “If Jesus is the truth, then His teachings apply to culture, politics, and social issues. The Bible has guidance on these matters.”

Rock Music and Faith

In April 2021, Cooper told “Undaunted.Life: A Man’s Podcast” that it is acceptable for Christians to engage in rock music. He asserted, “Music is not created by the Devil; it’s created by the Lord. All things are from God, and we should reclaim music for Christ.”

Recent Work

SKILLET’s latest album, “Revolution,” was released in November 2024 under their Hear It Loud label.
