Steve Lukather Clears Up 'Bulls—' Regarding Former Toto Singer

Steve Lukather, the guitarist for Toto, is addressing ongoing speculation regarding the band’s former lead singer, Bobby Kimball.

Kimball, known for his role in many of Toto’s iconic songs such as “Rosanna,” “Hold the Line,” and “Africa,” was part of the band from 1977 until 1984. His departure was influenced by struggles with substance abuse and internal conflicts within the group. He later rejoined Toto from 1998 until 2008.

Speculation about a feud between Lukather and Kimball has surfaced repeatedly, particularly after Kimball was not included in the band’s reunion in 2010. Despite Kimball’s continued absence from the group, Lukather asserts that their relationship remains positive.

Lukather Refutes Feud Allegations

During a recent interview on the Rockonteurs podcast, Lukather stated, “Listen, I love Bobby, and we’ve been in touch. I love him, and there’s a third party involved that sends love. There was all this nonsense in the early ‘90s about how we were mortal enemies and all this crap. That was just a lie.”

He further praised Kimball’s vocal abilities, calling him “one of the greatest singers I’ve ever been around” and noting, “When the voice was on, he was untouchable. And you have that much power, man. It takes a lot to make that power come alive.”

Lukather also touched on Kimball’s health, mentioning that he is “starting to lose touch with who he is now because of the dementia.” He expressed sadness over the situation, stating, “It’s very sad, and I have no right to talk about it,” while reaffirming his affection for Kimball: “I love Bobby Kimball.”

Toto is scheduled to kick off a North American tour on February 18, 2026, in Milwaukee.
