Tricia Hutton, a teacher from Ireland, fulfilled her long-held ambition of living overseas by moving to Japan in 2022 with her teenage son, Ronan. This decision also meant managing a long-distance relationship with her partner in Carlow.

Having traveled extensively, Tricia sought a fresh adventure as she reached middle age. She decided to bring Ronan along for the experience.

Initially planning a two-year stay, Tricia shared her experiences and reasons for choosing Japan, a country far from Ireland, with RSVP.

Choosing Japan Over Paris

Tricia initially had her heart set on Paris, but her son’s interest in anime, a Japanese animation style, influenced their decision.

“It felt like a mid-life crisis,” Tricia admitted. “I needed an adventure and wanted to strengthen my bond with Ronan.”

Though her plans surprised many, her partner understood her motivations for moving to Japan.

Initially planning a one-year stay for Ronan’s transition year, Tricia extended their stay after realizing how settled they had become.

She applied for jobs through an agency, focusing solely on Japan. Nagoya was the perfect fit due to its location and her work opportunities.

Documenting Life in Japan

Tricia initially planned to share her experiences on TikTok but found the cultural differences overwhelming. After a year, she began documenting their life, gaining significant attention for her insights into Japanese culture.
